This is a brief history of Campus Design, founded in 1992 by Stephen Massengale and David Postar.  Campus Design was established to market Texas Tech University merchandise in South Plains Mall located in Lubbock, Texas.  Mr. Massengale and Mr. Postar operated the company from a temporary cart for three years.  In 1995, Campus Design opened their second location at 1213 University in Lubbock directly across from Texas Tech University and moved from a cart to a permanent kiosk in South Plains Mall the same year.

In October of 1995, Campus Design formed a new business named Advanced Graphix.  Advanced Graphix was formed to support Campus Design with wholesale and custom screen-printing merchandise.

Alan Berger became manager of Campus Design in February of 1996.  Mr. Berger brought retail knowledge to the company and strengthened Campus Design’s infrastructure.  Mr. Berger began retail training and improved the skills of the sales associates.  In addition, Mr. Berger added computers and a software package which tracks sales, inventory, cost of goods sold, and vendors thereby simplifying the ordering process and more accurately determining profitability.  He also improved the inventory levels and product mix.  The results of his efforts were increased sales, increased net profit, lower cost of goods sold and more accurate accounting.

In 1998, Mr. Massengale bought out Mr. Postar shares of Campus Design, Inc. and Mr. Berger took over as Vice President of the corporation.

Since 1995, Campus Design has participated in Raider Alley, an event that is held for three hours before every Texas Tech home football game.  Participation in Raider Alley has produced substantial merchandise sales every year.

In 1999, Mr. Berger closed the store at 1213 University and opened a new store in Kingsgate Center located in Lubbock.  The new Campus Design store was designed and renovated by Mr. Massengale and Mr. Berger and is still the most attractive Texas Tech University merchandise store in Lubbock.  Since moving the store to Kingsgate Center, Campus Design has seen a huge increase in sales.

In May of 1999, Mr. Berger began work on a functional website to market Campus Design and Texas Tech merchandise.  The website was developed by a company out of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma and has many extra features that make it simple to use and to update.  Web-based sales have grown by huge leaps since 1999.  Campus Design on the web can now be accessed from Texas Tech University’s home page, the Lubbock Avalanche Journal’s website (Lubbock’s major newspaper), the Texas Tech Alumni Association’s website and Campus Design’s own URL.  The web is a major source of sales for Campus Design.

In October 2001, Campus Design took over operation of the Texas Tech University Alumni Association’s retail location located on the Texas Tech campus inside the Merket Alumni Center.

Campus Design currently has three locations.  Kingsgate Center is the main location and is responsible for half of the gross revenue.  The kiosk in South Plains Mall is a great location for Christmas traffic and spontaneous purchases.  The store located in the Texas Tech Alumni Association’s Center is a direct tie to the University and gives Campus Design a competitive edge in serving Texas Tech alumni.

Alan D. Berger purchased Campus Design from Stephen L. Massengale in November of 2002.

In 2006, Campus Design moved from Kingsgate Center to 98th and Quaker where they built what has been called the best college store in the country.  Thousands of visitors come to this store every year just to view the unique displays, because every display is a representation of a building on campus.  When you are in town, it is definitely worth seeing.

Campus Design is owned and operated by Alan Berger. For more information, visit our contact informationpage.
